Sentencing underway in botched burglary death of popular Surrey Realtor

Surveillance video from Surrey, B.C. Realtor Colin Hill's home at165 Street and 64th AvenueshowsKhouri Green shooting and killing the 42-year-old real estate agent in July of 2015.

Defence and Crown counsel have jointly asked for a life sentence for Green with no parole for 17 years.

Friends and family packed the courtroom on Monday for Green's sentencing hearing many of them sobbing uncontrollably as the surveillance video played, showing Hill's last few moments of life.

Surveillance video shows shooting

The footage shows Green, who was 22 at the time, walk up to Hill's front door.

Crown counsel Shelen Rail says Hill opened the door and that's when Green pulled out a gun. After an altercation between the two men, Green appears to shoot Hill.

The fight continuesoutside as both men tryto gain control of the gun. The video shows Hill's son, Matthew, come out to try and help his dad.The father and son then try to run back into the house.

Rail says that's when Hill is shot a second time this time, in the back.Matthew Hill says he watched his father die in his arms.

A good husband, father

"Losing my dad in my arms is the hardest thing I've ever had to face," said Hillina victim impact statement read in court.

Hill also said his father saved the lives of the rest of their family by telling them to hide, while he tried to stop Green from barging into the home.

Several friends and family members also read victim impact statements during the sentencinghearing.

Rail read a statement from Hill's eight-year-old daughter, Leah, who said she misses her dad.

"I don't smile anymore. My brother doesn't smile anymore.My mother doesn't smile anymore. We don't have a family anymore," Rail read.

Hill's wife, Becky,also wrote a statement that Rail read for the courtroom. She said she still doesn't know why Green came to their doorstep and killed her husband.

"Why would you do that? Why would you shoot my husband," read Becky Hill's statement. She adds he was a good husband and a good father.

Rail says in almost all of the victim impact statements, there isconsistent mention of fear and a loss of security because of the random nature of the act.

She adds Green's actions were 'motivated by greed,' saying that he made a living off of selling drugs and property theft.

Green's apology

Green wore black pants and a black untucked dress shirt to the first day of his two-day sentencinghearing. He looked down for much of the proceedings.

After the victim impact statements, he addressed Hill'sfriends and family members in the courtroom.

Green said he was "really sorry," as he read his statement in a low, quivering voice while occasionally wiping tears from his eyes.

He added that his selfishness not only destroyed other people's lives, but his own family's lives as well. He ended by asking if Hill's family can 'find it in their hearts' to forgive him.

"All that I ask is that his family finds peace of mind for the terrible act I've committed."

Green pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Colin Hill in November 2016.
