Police seek burglar who stole items from Nanaimo care home while residents slept

Police in Nanaimo are searching for a suspect after they say a man broke into a care home for seniors and stole items while people slept.

Police say the man tried to enter the facility through the front door around 4 a.m. on Friday andfound it locked.

After breaking into several cars in the parking lot, police say the man climbed through the unlocked windows of ground floor rooms.

"While the seniors were sleeping, he rummaged through and stole various items," said Const.Gary O'Brien with the Nanaimo RCMP.

Some costumejewellery may have been stolen during the break and enter.

The name and location of the facility is not being released for safety reasons, but O'Brien said the home is reviewing its security features.

The suspect was also caught on surveillance video.

"So, what we have is a picture now of the individual. We are hoping that somebody can identify him and hold this guy accountable," O'Brien said.

The man was wearing a balaclava over his face to obscure his identity but his left hand was covered in a cast and his pinky and ring finger were wrapped in a bandage.
