Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the B.C. South Coast, forecasting 50 millimetresof rain will fall on the North Shore, northern sections of West Fraser Valley and southern sections of Howe Sound by Tuesday morning.

The agency notes the ground is already near saturation, and has little ability to absorb further rainfall, so flooding in low-lying areas is expected.

"A strong frontal system will bring rain to the south coast today and the rain will become heavy at times tonight," said a statement from Environment Canada released Monday morning.

"Don't approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts."

Environment Canada predicts the heavy rain will taper off to a few showers by Tuesday morning as the front moves away to the south.
