Police stun young woman with Taser after knife incident

A 20-year-old woman was shocked by a Taser and arrested at a grocery store in North Vancouver, B.C., after she allegedly waved knives and stabbed fruit inside the store Thursday afternoon, RCMP said.

Police initially thought the young-looking woman was 14 but later found out she was actually 20.

The woman was reported to be holding six- or seven-inch knives in each hand and stabbing fruit at Save-On-Foods in Lynn Valley Centre, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP said.

She was also said to be walking through the aisles, making threatening comments, Cpl. Randall Wong told CBC News.

"When the complaint came in by the public, she was not only stabbing the fruit, but waving the knives at the general public, walking around the area, and comments were coming from her at that time," Wong said.

Two police officers arrived and later tried to Taser the woman and subdue her.

"They came close, but she managed to stay out of their way," Wong said.

One jolt hit her backpack and she received a shock while the other bounced off of it and missed her body and she "eventually threw the knives at the member that she was facing," he alleged.

Police were worried about the woman's state of mind and called an ambulance to check her before taking her to the police station, Wong said.

She will undergo a full medical examination in hospital before she is released, he said.

"This is kind of unique. We're kind of concerned a young female under that state of mind would behave in that manner," Wong said.

The woman will likely be charged with threatening and assaulting a police officer, he said.
