Independent investigators have been called in to investigate a fatal incident that closed Metro Vancouver's Pattullo Bridge early Monday morning.

According to a statement released by the IIO, several police agencies responded to a report of a person in distress on or near the Pattullo Bridge.

"According to the police, the subject of the call did not survive," said the statement.

The IIO is normally called to take over any investigation involving police that results in a death or serious injury.

The Monday morning commute was jammed after both lanes of the bridge were first closed by police around 3:30 a.m. PT. The bridge was reopened around 9 a.m.
