New Westminster police-involved shooting leaves man in critical condition

New Westminster police are investigating a shooting in New Westminster's Queensborough neighbourhood.

Police say they have recovered a firearm from the scene they believe belongs to the victim

A man has been taken to hospital in critical condition in the aftermath of a police-involved shooting near the Walmartin New Westminster's Queensborough neighbourhood.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which provides civilian oversight ofserious policeincidents, has taken over the investigation.

According to the IIO, New Westminster police were called to the vicinity of the WalMartaround 12 p.m. PT Friday after reports a man was causing a disturbance.

Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott said after they arrivedthere was an interaction with a second man, who was subsequently shot. He said a firearm has been recovered from the scene. Police believe it belongs to the man who was shot.

The B.C. Ambulance Service says he was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The IIO says it has deployed investigators to the scene who will be obtaining physical evidence and interviewing witnesses.
