Highway to Whistler reopens after rockslide

B.C.'s Sea-to-Sky Highway, which connects Vancouver and Whistler, re-opened Sunday evening after a massive rockslide closed the narrow, winding route earlier in the day.

No one was hurt by the slide, whichforced a 10-kilometre stretch of Highway 99 to close,officials said. But itkept many travellers waiting for several hours while crews cleaned up the debris.

Mike Long, a spokesmanwith B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation, saida reason for the slide has not yet been determined.

Crewshad beenblasting in the area as part of a highway improvement project ahead of the 2010 Olympics.The route will be used to allow people to travel to sporting events during the games.

The slide happened at Ansell Place, several kilometres north ofthe Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.

Long saidcrews had been hampered by one particularly large boulder that was swept onto the road by the slide.

He said the rock, which was about the height of a person, was blasted to remove it.

Geotechnical experts were sent to the scene to investigate what could have caused the slide.
