Gang violence tip prompts Vancouver police warning

Vancouver police say they'll be out in force at the site of a New Year's Eve dance party after getting information about the possibility of gang violence.

Vancouver police say they'll be out in force at the site of a New Year's Eve dance party after getting information about the possibility of gang violence.

The party is being held at the Pacific Coliseum from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Police aren't giving any details about the threat of violence, but say they're working with the organizers of the party to ensure public safety and are asking anyone attending the event to report anything that seems out of the ordinary.

Vancouver police also say dozens of extra officers will be on patrol in the rest of the city New Year's Eve.

That includes along the Granville entertainment district and Gastown, two of the areas popular with partiers.

To help make things safer, the 900- and 1000-blocks of Granville Streetbetween Smithe and Helmcken streets will be turned into a pedestrian-only zone New Years Eve to accommodate the large crowds expected there.
