Funeral held for 5 victims of Surrey crash

Hundreds of family and friends gathered Friday for the funeral of three generations of one family killed in a tragic car crash in South Surrey last Sunday.

Hundreds of family and friends gathered Friday forthe funeral of three generations of one family killed ina tragic car crashin South Surrey last Sunday.

Two young children, their mother, their grandmother and their aunt died instantly when their car was hit broadside by a minivan after the driver allegedly ran a red light on the Pacific Highway Sunday.

Gurmit Sachdeva lost his wife, his five-year old-son, his three-year-old daughter, his sister, and his mother.

Mourners said it was an emotional funeral and the family is overcome by grief.

Gurcharan Sigh Bagrit was at the funeral and said the entire community will support the family through this difficult time.

"Every type of help, people will help, people will go to their house and whatever is required, they will help, because it is a very sad incident," he said.

The Sachdeva family owns a sweet shop in Surrey and is well known in the South Asian community.

Darshi Dhillon runs a beauty salon in the same strip mall as the sweet shop and said she has known the Sachdevas for ten years.

"[The] whole community actually feels so down, like depressed," she said.

"Everybody talks about that death, and that accident. Every single person. It's very painful for the community, it's not easy to take it. Everybody goes numb when they hear it."

The 46-year-old minivan driver, a man from Langley, was the only survivor of the crash.

RCMP say they haven't spoken to the man, who isnow heavilysedated and inserious but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

The man will likely face charges, police say, but investigators are also looking intowhether he had a medical condition that may have contributed to the accident.

Funeral services took place at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta, B.C.
