Foul play suspected in Salt Spring Island death

Police are now calling the death 45-year-old Salt Spring Island resident Joseph Bernie a homicide.

Investigators now say foul play is suspected in the death of Salt Spring Island residentJoseph Patrick Bernie, whose body was discovered Oct.10on a creek bank near FulfordHarbour.

The BC Coroners Service and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit continue to investigate and will not be releasing the cause of death.

"We're conscious of the impact this death has had on Joseph'sfamily, and the broader community on Salt Spring Island", said Sgt.George Jenkins, Detachment Commander of the Salt Spring RCMP.

Police say there is nothing about the case to indicate the public is at risk.

Bernie was the subject of a Salt Spring RCMP missing persons bulletin in April 2014, and was subsequently found.The bulletin described himas "an itinerant who does casual labour, including farm work and some artistry". It also noted that Bernie had ahistory of mental health issues.

The body of the 45-year-oldwas discovered by recreational fishermen on a creek bank close to the Old Fulford Inn.

Anyone with information on Bernie's whereabouts in the days leading up to Oct. 10th, is asked to contact the Salt
Spring RCMP at 250-537-5555, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
