Draft dodgers of Lund, B.C. subject of upcoming documentary

The upcoming documentary TheEnd of the Road by filmmakers Tai Uhlmann and Theo Angellexplores how the Sunshine Coast community of Lund, B.C. became an accidental Utopia for draft dodgers in the late 1960s.

"I grew up as a hippie kid in Lund," Uhlmann told On The Island's Gregor Craigie.

"When I would tell people about growing up with an outhouse and no electricity or running water, that my parents did more drugs than I did, I realized that my childhood was not the norm."

She said she realized many of the people who moved to Lundin the 1960s are now getting older, and she wanted to document their stories sooner rather than later.

"People were looking for a safe and neutral haven. They wanted to reject convention and go back to the land," she said.

"Lund overall was a really welcoming place for the outcasts of society and continues to be today."

The trailer for the filmwill be screened at the Powell River Film Festival this week.

The film itself is still in production, and Uhlmann hopes it will be released in the winter.
