Cyclist dead following early morning collision in Port Coquitlam

A 29-year-old man from Port Coquitlam died early Saturday morning after being struck by a van while he was riding a bicycle on Coast Meridian Overpass atKingsway Avenue.

RCMP say the man died at the scene around 2 a.m. PT. Officers closed the intersection following the incident. Witnesses said the bicycle the man was riding was smashed and trapped under part of the front of the van.

Investigators say the driver of the van stayed at the scene and is cooperatingwith their investigation. Officers say they do not believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

The cyclistwas heading south on Coast Meridian Overpass when hewasstruck, while the driver was heading east on Kingsway.

Sgt. Quentin Frewing with Coquitlam RCMPsaid regardless of who is at fault in a collision, it's up to everyone on the road to look out for potential hazards.

"Never assume that because you have the right of way or because you can see someone else that they see you or that everyone will stop for you," Frewig said.

There may have been witnesses who left before police arrived, Frewing said. RCMP askanyone who witnessed the accident to callCoquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and ask for Const. Bryan Battel.

The intersection was closed for several hours, but by early afternoon police said it had reopened.
