Canadian Cancer Society robbed in Mission, B.C.

The Canadian Cancer Society in Mission, B.C. has become the latest charity to be targeted by thieves but the local community is rallying around to help.

Community has rallied to help society, donating thousands of dollars and a new safe

Volunteer Beverly Dixon said the community really stepped up when the Canadian Cancer Society was robbed in Mission, B.C. (CBC)

The Canadian Cancer Society in Mission, B.C. has received thousands of dollars in donations after becomingthe latest victimin arash of burglaries at several non-profits over the last few months.

The society's regional director Allan Mugford saidthieves broke through the wall of its office on Jan. 16.

"They busted through the wall," said Mugford. "The dishes were all over the floor. Then they busted into the cabinets."

The culprits caused $500 of damage andstole $3,000 ingoods and cash, intendedto help send sick kids to summer camp and fund pediatric research.

"It was pretty devastating. We don't anticipate that folks would target charities like ourselves that are working with the community to fight a cause like cancer."

Beverly Dixon, a volunteer with the society washeartbroken by the thefts.

"Absolutelyshocked and very sad, really sad,to think that somebody had come in and stolen the funds that were going to be used for the children," said Dixon. "It was really hard not to just break down at that point."

Regional director Allan Mugford says the donations made by the community have been amazing.

But since news of the robbery broke, the community has rallied round to help the society.Donations havepoured in, totalling $2,500, andCoast Capitalhas offered a further $3,500.

"It's been amazing. [We're] so appreciative for people to do outreach and come to the forefront, even just the sympathy and support they've shown," saidMugford.

The Canadian Cancer Society says it's extremely grateful for all of the donations which also includea new safeand alarm system.
