Calgary hiker falls 200m to his death in Yoho National Park

RCMP say the 21-year-old man was with a group of friends when he lost his footing and fell. He died en route by helicopter to meet with emergency responders.

A 21-year-old man from Calgary has died while hiking in Yoho National Park Thursday, say police.

"At this time we can confirm that the male was hiking with a group of friends in the alpine above the Little Yoho Campground in Yoho National Park," said Const. Spencer Lainchbury.

"It's believed that the male lost his footing, falling approximately 200 metres."

RCMP said a Canadian Forces helicopter flying in the area responded shortly afterthe man's three male friends activated a personal locator beacon.

Police and emergency responders waited for the helicopterin Golden, B.C., but the hiker died before it arrived.

The other hikers were not injured.
