A pair of of two-alarm fires stretched the capacity of Burnaby fire crews early Tuesday morning.

An unoccupied commercial building at Kingsway and 13th Avenue caught fire around 3 a.m. Smoke and flames were visible in the surrounding area.

About two hours later, crews responded to a second call from the 8200 block of Government Street, where a house was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say it appears to have been the home of a hoarder, whose belongings made it unsafe for crews to enter the building.

Burnaby Fire Chief Chris Bowcock said his department was nearing its capacity containing the two large fires.

"We were getting to the point where we were a little bit short at the second fire," he said. "We made some adjustments in the operation at the first [scene] to cover both events."

No one was injured in either fire. The causes remain under investigation.
