Suspicious Burnaby fire displaces family of 3

A resident says he saw the fire break out from his bedroom window and tried to pour water on it to try and stop the flames.

Fire appears to have started in garage area but exact cause is unknown

A family of threehas been displaced after a suspicious fire destroyed their garage and patio inBurnaby.

The flames broke out around 11:30 p.m. Saturday around their garageon Paulus Crescent.

One resident said he saw the fire break out just outside his window, and tried to pour water on it as his mom called 911.

Assistant Chief David Graystone with Burnaby Fire says crews had initial challenges putting the flames out, but were able to prevent the fire from spreading further through the house.

"Because of the debris inside of the garage area where it appears to have started, we were more worried about it going up the walls and into the ceiling," he said.

"But we stopped that from happening, and the crews contained the fire to the basement."

Graystone says the fire is considered to besuspicious at this timeand that Burnaby RCMP will be investigating.
