BC Rail trial delay extended again

The corruption trial of three former B.C. government staffers was postponed yet again on Wednesday morning atB.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

On Monday Judge Anne MacKenzie announced the trial would be adjourned until Wednesday so the legal teams could discuss undisclosed issues.

But on Wednesday the doors of the courtroom remained locked and no further reasons for the delay were given.

But a source told CBC News that lawyers for the defence called in late on Tuesday afternoon to ask for another day to work out legal matters.

The trial was originally scheduled to resume on Monday, after being postponed on May 25 because one of the accused, Aneal Basi, fell ill.

The trial is looking into former ministerial aides Dave Basi and Bobby Virk, who are facing charges of fraud and breach of trust relating to the privatization of the BC Rail company.

Basi and Virk are accused of leaking confidential government information to a lobbyist who worked for Denver-based OmniTrax, one of three companies vying for B.C. Rail, which was sold to CN Rail in November 2003.
