Abbotsford teen killed in shooting identified

19-year-old who was shot to death in Abbotsford, B.C. on Monday afternoon was a student at the University of the Fraser Valley.

The 19-year-old who died after being shot in AbbotsfordMonday afternoon has been identified as University of the Fraser Valley student Jagvir Malhi.

Officers were called to the intersection of Simpson Road and Ross Road for reports of a shooting at 3:30 p.m. PT and foundMalhi suffering from a gunshot wound. Hewas transported to hospitalwhere he died from his injuries.

The UFV says it has grief counselling available forstudents.

According to his Facebook page,Malhiwas a former student at W.J.MouatSecondary School.

"Somebody lost their child; it's heartbreaking. Somebody with aspirations and dreams and hopes. They're just shattered in a matter of fiveminutes," said Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra, who lives in the neighbourhood where Malhi was found.

"Part of it really is just showing basic empathy and not stereotyping it as another brown boy killed."

The Abbotsford Police Department Major Crime Unit, Patrol Division, Gang Crime Unit, and Forensic Identification Unit were on thescene collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses.

The investigation has beenhandled by theIntegrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).
