Six people were rescued after their boat ran aground near Tofino late Thursday night.

Troy Haddock with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria said they received a call around 10 p.m. PT from some residents living in the village of Kakawis, around four kilometres north of Tofino.

They had spotted a boat that hit a rock near the shoreline, leaving the six passengers stranded.

A Canadian Coast Guard lifeboat and a passing vessel were able rescue the six passengers and take them back to Tofino.

Only one passenger was injured during the collision. Haddock said it's unknown if the boat had its running lights on at the time.
