Vancouver asks for input on 10th Avenue bike lane

For over a decade, cyclists have shared the road with cars and parked vehicles along the 10th Avenue Corridor, now the city is asking for public input as it designs a separated bike path for the area.

Public can share feedback on design options until May 15, 2016

Vancouver is asking for public input as itdesignsa separatedbike path along the 10th Avenue corridor.

"People right now are on the roadway,"said Dale Bracewell, manager of active transportation with the City of Vancouver.

The city will share three design options at an open house today.

The 10thAvenue bikeway runs from Victoria Drive to Trafalgar Street and serves as an access point to many health institutions like Vancouver General Hospital.

"We are trying to create a space where people biking are no longer sharing the roadway, so people can feel comfortable and safe," he said.

The three design options are a uni-directional bikeway where cyclists travel in one direction on either side of the street, a north side bi-directional bikeway or south side bi-directional bike way where both directions of cycling are side-by-side in a single bike lane.

Staff will then review the feedback and continue consultation before recommending a design option to the public in the Fall of 2016. Reconstruction of the corridor is expected to begin in 2017.

Those unable to drop by the open house can submittheir feedback by May 15, 2016.
