Police say vandals scratched nearly 300 cars 2 weeks ago

As many as 100 cars in the Vancouver suburb of Coquitlam had their paint jobs damaged with large scrapes over the Easter weekend. It was the second such incident in a month, police said.

Coquitlam resident Remi Boileau says he has no idea what provoked someone to vandalize as many as 100 cars. ((CBC) )

Coquitlam RCMP have been unable so far to put together a description of any suspects, spokeswoman Cpl.Jane Baptista said Monday.

"I'm not sure if there's a specific suspect in this case.I've heard some hearsay but I haven't been able to confirm anything," Baptista said.

Two weeks ago, close to 300 vehicles were keyed at the Silver City movie theatre south of Austin Avenue towards Mundy Street and Mariner Way.The two locations where the cars were vandalized are only afive-minute drive apart.

Police don't yet have a suspectand aren't sure if the two incidents are linked, Baptista said.

But she added that they will investigate further.

"We will often work hand-in-hand with ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) with any other detachment area that is having the same problem and work to see if there is an issue at this time," she said.

Harry Dyrndahl says his new truck was scratched on both sides over the Easter long weekend. ((CBC))

Residents in this Coquitlam neighbourhood said they're baffled by the unprovoked vandalism.

"What would provoke someone to go around to do this is just beyond me. I haven't got a clue," said Remi Boileau, who found out on Sunday his two vehicles were keyed.

Harry Dyrndahl said he alsogot hit. "I got an absolutely brand new truck I haven't even had a chance to go 10 miles on it and they've got it both sides."

While the area has a block watch, Dyrndahl said he's surprised no one saw anything.

"It's disheartening because the ones that are hurt the worst are us. We all got deductibles," he said.

Randy Friesen, another victim, said he witnessed the same scene on several streets in the neighbourhood.

"This was not just someone walking by and scratching one side, but all the way around the vehicles, on all panels,'' said Friesen said.

After finding scratch marks on both his truck and his wife's car, Friesen took a walk around the neighbourhood and noticed that virtuallyevery single car had been damaged in a similar way, even those in carports and open garages, he said.
