Tesla's Model X, an all-electric SUV, is making its auto show debut at the Canadian International Auto Show, which begins Friday in Toronto.

The vehicle can go 400 kilometres on a single charge, and has seating for seven passengers and their gear, the company said in a release. Although it was announced in September, the unveiling in Toronto is the first time the Model X has been shown at any auto show, anywhere in the world, organizers said.

Featuring falcon-wing doors that open upwards, the Model X can go from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 3.4 seconds when the car is set to "ludicrous mode," according to California-based Tesla.

The Model X is the third vehicle Tesla has made, after the since-discontinued roadster, and the Model S sedan. Tesla sold 50,000 vehicles in a year for the first time in 2015, and plans to expand quickly.

So far, all of Tesla's vehicles have been priced in the high five figures to compete with luxury rivals such as Mercedes and BMW.

But key to the company's expansion will be its next model, called the Model 3, set to be released within the next 12 months. The cost of owning a Model 3will start ataround $35,000 US.
