Avian flu risk leads to ban on bringing eggs, poultry from some U.S. states

Travellers are being warned not to bring poultry products from some U.S. states into Canada because of the risk of avian flu.

So shoppers who nip across the border for eggs, turkey, chicken or other uncooked poultry products will have to be careful where the products come from. With Christmas on the horizon, some people seek out deals on these products in the U.S.

The Canada Border Services Agency announced Thursday products from the following states are prohibited.

• Iowa.
• Kansas.
• Minnesota.
• Missouri.
• Nebraska.
• North Dakota.
• South Dakota.

North Dakota and Minnesota border on Canada.

The border agency said poultry products that don't show a state of origin also could be blocked at the border.

Avian flu is a highly contagious disease that mainly affects chickens and turkeys. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency had to quarantine two parts of Ontario this year in an effort to get rid of the disease.
