Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in Terminator Genisys trailer

The former California governor promised he'd be back, and here he is, 30 years after famously promising to return to the science fiction franchise.

Arnold Schwarzeneggeris back in action in the newlyreleased trailer for Terminator Genisys, three decadesafter his cyborg assassin character first declared"I'll be back."

The trailer, released Thursday by Paramount Pictures,starts in war-ravaged Los Angeles with Skynet's terrifying HK-Aerials swooping over a destroyed Hollywood sign.

It's 2029, and the human rebels still haven't given up their bloody resistance against the machines.

"I look at each of you and I see the marks of this long and terrible war," says a badly scarred John Connor (played by Zero Dark Thirty actor Jason Clarke).

"If we die tonight, mankind dies with us," he warns before trusted lieutenant Kyle Reese (played by Jai Courtney) volunteers to go back in time tosave John's mother Sarah Connorand ensure the rebel leader will be born.

'Everything has changed'

It's the same story hook from James Cameron's original 1984 film. But when Reese returns this time, Sarah (played byGame of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke) tells him "everything's changed" primarily that she's been raised by herformernemesis:Schwarzenegger's TerminatorT-800.

One thing hasn't changed, and that's theformer California governor's desire to kick butt.

At 67, Schwarzenegger is shown reprising his iconic action role, wielding a shotgun and jumping out of a helicopter.The trailer even includes augmented shots from the first movie, contrasted with later scenes in which Schwarzeneggerhas grey hair.

With all the temporalgymnastics in the trailer, even the most dedicated Terminator fans might have troubled predicting what's going to happen in the highlyanticipated movie.

Director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World)is at the helm of this reboot,which is intended to be the first film in a new trilogy.The science fiction franchise has already earned $1.4 billion US.

TerminatorGenisys is due for release on July1, 2015.
