CBC/RADIO-CANADA CELEBRATES 295 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARD NOMINATIONS

CBC original series SORT OF leads all television nominations overall with 13 nods 

CBC/Radio-Canada films receive 59 nominations led by Danis Goulet’s NIGHT RAIDERS, Michael McGowan’s ALL MY PUNY SORROWS, Ivan Grbovic’s DRUNKEN BIRDS | LES OISEAUX IVRES, and Bretten Hannam’s WILDHOOD

CBC NEWS recognized with 28 nominations across national and local categories
including multiple nods for THE NATIONAL, THE FIFTH ESTATE, MARKETPLACE and ROSEMARY BARTON LIVE

CBC’s original scripted programming earns 124 nominations led by SORT OF, PRETTY HARD CASES, CORONER, KIM’S CONVENIENCE and MURDOCH MYSTERIES

CBC original unscripted, arts and documentary programming receives 75 nominations led by CBC Arts’ 21 BLACK FUTURES, THE NATURE OF THINGS, DEAD MAN'S SWITCH - A CRYPTO MYSTERY, BATTLE OF THE BLADES, JUNOS 2021, ARCTIC VETS and FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE

CBC SPORTS receives nine nominations for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 

 

CBC/Radio-Canada and its production partners have received 295 nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards, reflecting the public broadcaster’s commitment to Canadian content, creators and communities. The awards will be presented during Canadian Screen Week, April 4 through April 10, 2022, including the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards show, which will broadcast on CBC and CBC Gem on Sunday, April 10 at 8 p.m. (9 AT/ 9:30 NT).

Highlights of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Canadian Screen Award nominations include the following:

  • CBC NEWS received 28 nominations in 22 network, local and digital categories including multiple nods for flagship news and investigative programs THE NATIONAL (8),THE FIFTH ESTATE (4) and MARKETPLACE (2). CBC NEWS NETWORK received four nominations including two for ROSEMARY BARTON LIVE, and CBC regional news programs received seven nominations in three categories for excellence in Toronto (2), Vancouver (2), Manitoba (1), Nova Scotia (1), and Saskatchewan (1). CBC News originals for CBC Gem, BIG NEWS and HOW TO START A REVOLUTION, each garnered a nomination. 

 

  • CBC’s original scripted programming has earned 124 nominations, including Best Comedy Series nominations for KIM’S CONVENIENCE, SORT OF and STRAYS; Best Sketch Comedy Series nods for HUMOUR RESOURCES, TALLBOYZ and THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES; and Best Drama Series nominations for CORONER, MOONSHINE and THE NORTH WATER (produced in partnership with Radio-Canada and Super Channel).
    • Comedy: SORT OF (13) including Best Comedy Series, three nods for Best Writing and two for Best Direction; PRETTY HARD CASES (11) including Best Direction; KIM’S CONVENIENCE (10) including its fifth Best Comedy Series nomination; WORKIN’ MOMS (7); TALLBOYZ (4), THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES (4) and HUMOUR RESOURCES (2) including Best Sketch Comedy Program or Series and Best Performances, Sketch Comedy (Individual or Ensemble) for each; and a Best Comedy Series nomination for STRAYS

 

  • Drama: CORONER (10) including Best Drama Series and two nominations for Best Writing; MURDOCH MYSTERIES (9); FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES (7); DIGGSTOWN (5) including Best Writing, Drama Series; MOONSHINE (5) and THE NORTH WATER (4) including Best Drama Series for each; and BURDEN OF TRUTH (3). 

 

  • CBC GEM original scripted series received Best Web Program or Series, Fiction nominations for FOR THE RECORD (8), THE COMMUNIST’S DAUGHTER (6) and OVERLORD AND THE UNDERWOODS (3), with NEXT STOP (2) and BROAD APPEAL (1) also nominated.

 

  • CBC KIDS has garnered nine nominations, including CBC and Radio-Canada original series ENDLINGS (5) for Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program or Series; DINO RANCH (1) for Best Pre-School Program or Series; and THE BRAVEST KNIGHT (1) for Best Performance, Animation. CBC KIDS NEWS received two nominations for CBC KIDS NEWS COVID EXPLAINER and CBC KIDS NEWS MINECRAFT BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL.

 

  • CBC’s original unscripted, arts and documentary programming has received 75 nominations including:
    • Unscripted & Arts: Eight nominations for CBC Arts’ 21 BLACK FUTURES, including Best Web Program or Series Fiction, two writing nods, and two directing nods; four nominations each for BATTLE OF THE BLADES and JUNOS 2021; three nominations each for ARCTIC VETS, THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW and SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE; nods for THE 2021 GOVERNOR GENERAL'S PERFORMING ARTS AWARDS (2); CBC ARTS: EXHIBITIONISTS (2); FAMILY FEUD CANADA (2); WRITING THE LAND (2); and single nominations for ANYONE’S GAME; INDSPIRE AWARDS 2021; NEW YEAR’S EVE; and RACE AGAINST THE TIDE

 

  • CBC Gem original comedy-doc series FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE received three nominations, including Best Factual Series, and FARM CRIME received two nominations including Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction. 

 

  • Documentaries: CBC and documentary Channel documentaries received a total of 33 nominations including 11 nods for THE NATURE OF THINGS, five nominations for original doc DEAD MAN'S SWITCH - A CRYPTO MYSTERY, and three for ONE OF OURS. CBC Halifax’s BEING BLACK IN HALIFAX, HOW IT FEELS TO BE FREE, NIKE’S BIG BET: ALBERTO SALAZAR AND THE FINE LINE OF SPORT, and special presentation TERRY FOX: THE POWER OF ONE each received two nods. BORN BAD, CORAL GHOSTS, GIG IS UP: A VERY HUMAN TECH DOC, MEET AND EAT AT LEE'S GARDEN and CBC Manitoba’s WE KNOW THE TRUTH: STORIES TO INSPIRE RECONCILIATION each received one. CBC Short Docs was recognized with a nod for FATIMA IN KABUL.

 

  • CBC SPORTS received nine nominations for its coverage of the OLYMPIC GAMES TOKYO 2020, including for Best Sports Program or Series, Best Sports Host, Best Sports Analyst, Best Sports Play-by-Play Announcer, and Best Live Production, Social Media for THE EXTRA HOUR.

 

  • CBC and Radio-Canada received 59 nominations for short and feature films supported by the public broadcaster including CBC Films titles NIGHT RAIDERS (11), tied for the most film nominations, ALL MY PUNY SORROWS (8), WILDHOOD (6), LEARN TO SWIM (2), and CHARLOTTE (1), as well as CBC acquisitions ANGAKUSAJAUJUQ: THE SHAMAN’S APPRENTICE (1), and GIRLS SHOULDN'T WALK ALONE AT NIGHT | LES FILLES NE MARCHENT PAS SEULES LA NUIT (1). French-language films supported by Radio-Canada and recognized by the Academy include DRUNKEN BIRDS | LES OISEAUX IVRES (6), THE TIME THIEF | L'ARRACHEUSE DE TEMPS (5), MARIA CHAPDELAINE (4), BRAIN FREEZE (3), CONFESSIONS OF A HITMAN | CONFESSIONS (3), THE NOISE OF ENGINES | LE BRUIT DES MOTEURS (3), GOODBYE HAPPINESS | AU REVOIR LE BONHEUR (2), THE VINLAND CLUB | LE CLUB VINLAND (2), and BOOTLEGGER (1).
