Steve Sutherland

Steve grew up across the harbour from Sydney in Westmount, where he could see the belching plumes of the steel plant smokestacks from his parents' kitchen window. He spent a lot of time poking around the shorelines of Sydney Harbour, the Bras d'Or Lakes, and the Cape Breton Highlands, and that childhood interest left him with an abiding love of the outdoors.

He studied journalism at the University of King's College, then worked as a freelancer with CBC Radio in Halifax. In 1998, he moved back home to Cape Breton to take a job as a correspondent for Maritime Noon. Steve's work has taken him to all the compass points on the island, from the wharves of Eskasoni, Arichat, and Bay St Lawrence to the coasts of Port Hood, Point Aconi, and Main-A-Dieu; he's plied the waves off Louisbourg in a lobster boat, motored into Whycocomagh Bay in an oyster barge, and hung out the back hatch of a Canadian Forces Buffalo aircraft at 12,000 feet.

His stories have been recognized by the Atlantic Journalism Awards, the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, and the Atlantic Provinces Council on the Sciences. In 2004, he was awarded a fellowship with the U.S.-based Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources. He took over as host of Information Morning in 2007.

Steve most recently published a book, Getting it Done: Conversations with Cape Breton Leaders which stemmed from Information Morning's Leadership Series which aired on the show beginning in the fall of 2009.Steve lives in Northside East Bay with his wife and two children. He spends his spare time reading, boating, skiing, and rambling in the woods.
