Rhivu Rashid

Born and raised in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, Rhivu grew up in a vibrant family home known as Rampura Bari, bustling with 32 relatives. This lively upbringing nurtured his storytelling skills, as he often found himself captivating family members with tales gathered from all corners of his daily life.

Rhivus broadcasting career began in Bangladesh, where he hosted a popular late-night radio show and contributed to a leading youth magazine. These early experiences in one of the worlds most densely populated cities laid the groundwork for his passion for journalism and his dedication to amplifying voices that often go unheard.

After moving to Canada as a student, Rhivu joined CHMR 93.5 FM a.k.a MUN Radio during his time at Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic. There he hosted two weekly radio programs for four years serving the Bengali community in Newfoundland and Labrador. His work at CHMR wasnt just about his love for radio; it was about building bridges between cultures and creating a space where people felt heard and welcomed.

Rhivu's unique perspective and storytelling earned him the Best Student Journalism award at the 2023 Atlantic Journalism Awards for his documentary on an Afghan familys journey to Canada  and his work highlighting an international student's mental health struggle through a body image photograph.

At CBC NL, Rhivu expanded his reach across radio, television, and digital platforms, focusing on immigration and Indigenous storiessubjects close to his heart and shaped by his own lived experiences.

In 2024, Rhivu was honoured with the CBC EDI Award in the Gem category, recognizing his efforts to promote equity, representation and inclusion within CBC. This award underscores his commitment to creating a more inclusive media landscape, both on and off the air.

And theres more to Rhivu than just his resonant radio personality. Hes also a former national Rubiks cube champion and record holder in Bangladeshwith a peak solving time of about 7 seconds. Whether its solving puzzles like Sudoku and Minesweeper, or diving into deep conversations with strangers, Rhivu brings the same curiosity and drive to everything he does.

Its no wonder his quick grocery trips sometimes turn into hour-long adventures.

When hes not working, you might find him stargazing, chatting with his family back home, or cooking for his beloved wife.
