Deana Sumanac-Johnson

Deana Sumanac-Johnson is an Arts Reporter, appearing on CBC TV, The National, CBC News Network, CBC Radio and online at CBCNews.

Deana's job has taken her some glamorous places: this red carpet warrior has braved the Oscars in LA, as well as close to a decade of Toronto International Film Fest coverage here at home.

She feels at ease sitting opposite stars like Harrison Ford, Keira Knightley and Mark Wahlberg, or following around India's "royal family of cinema," the Kapoors.

But she also loves the adrenaline rush of filing arts news stories for The National, stories where entertainment and culture intersect with news of the day. Her recent pieces include a breakdown of why ebooks are so expensive and behind-the-scenes look at Oscar campaigning. Before appearing on-camera, Deana developed her journalistic chops as a current affairs producer on CBC News: Sunday--a show that hired her while she was still in journalism school. Her work there took her around the world--from Cannes to Glasgow to New York. A singer with training in piano and voice, Deana auditioned for the role of Maria in the Toronto production of "The Sound of Music". Her experience was captured in a frank video diary on CBC News: Sunday--one of her first on-camera appearances that gave rise to many more.In 2010, Deana won the gold Gabriel Award for a piece she produced and reported on, on "Emotichairs"--chairs that help deaf people experience the emotional impact of music. In one of her "previous incarnations," Deana was a Teaching Assistant, teaching...believe it or not...a course in Espionage.Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Deana is fluent in Serbo-Croatian and German. She holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature and History from McMaster University, and a B.Journ from Ryerson.
