From most searched to top sellers

When you think of Halloween costumes, what comes to mind? Spooky or creepy perhaps.

But every year, Halloween costumes also reflect what made an impact that year in pop culture, from pop stars to memes and beyond.

And as usual, CBC Kids News is here to help round up those costumes to give you some last-minute ideas, in case you’re still unsure of what to wear on Halloween night.

For this list, we take a look at what is trending on Google and what is most popular for two major Halloween costume retailers: Spirit Halloween and Amazon.

What’s trending on Google?

The Google Trends Data Team looked into search terms across Canada this year to determine the top trending costumes of 2024.

The top trending kids costumes are:

  • Taylor Swift.
  • Clown.
  • Harley Quinn.
  • Skeleton.
  • Barbie.

The appearance of Taylor Swift isn’t a total surprise, given her popularity and her performances in Canada next month.

Harley Quinn has also been in the cultural conversation with the new movie Joker: Folie à Deux, which came out earlier this month.

Barbie was one of the top costumes last year after the release of the Barbie film in 2023, so its appearance on the list isn’t a total surprise either.

The top pop culture looks based on Google searches in Canada are:

  • Joker.
  • Beetlejuice.
  • Deadpool.
  • Raygun.
  • Sabrina Carpenter.

Sabrina Carpenter made the list a little more than a month after her album Short & Sweet dropped, although her song Espresso has been topping global charts since April.

Raygun is the stage name of Rachael Gunn, an Australian breakdancer who competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Beetlejuice is perhaps the least surprising to see on these lists, with the second instalment of the movie franchise Beetlejuice Beetlejuice having been spooking audiences since its release last month.

Let’s get spooky with Spirit Halloween

On Oct. 8, major Halloween retailer Spirit Halloween dropped what it says are the costumes representing the biggest trends of the year.

It’s unclear if it, like Google, used data to inform its list or if it just let its Halloween expertise guide its choices.

Naturally, there was some overlap with Google, but also some new appearances:

  • Deadpool.
  • Joy, Anxiety, Sadness and Disgust (Inside Out 2).
  • Beetlejuice and Bob the Shrinker.
  • The Amazing Digital Circus (various characters).
  • Skibidi Toilet (and various other TikTok trends).
  • Art the Clown (Terrifier 3).

Amazon’s best sellers

Unlike Google and Spirit Halloween, Amazon hasn’t released an official list of what it sees as the trending Halloween costumes of 2024.

That being said, taking a look at their bestsellers in Costumes, Cosplay & Accessories list gives us a hint at what costumes shoppers are trying to piece together this year.

Here are some of the costumes that made the list.

  • Donald Trump.
  • Mario.
  • Princess.
  • Wizard.
  • Minnie Mouse.
  • Vampire.
  • Ash Ketchum.
