Liberal Karen McCrimmon tops in KanataCarleton

Voters in KanataCarleton have re-elected Liberal Karen McCrimmon.

At 12:09 a.m. Tuesday,with168 out of 208 votes counted,McCrimmon held onto KanataCarleton with43.4per cent of the vote or17,935 votes.

McCrimmonbeat out Conservative candidateJustina McCaffrey, who received 14,722 votes or35.6 per cent.

"We knew it was going to be a tough fight. There was no doubt about that at all," she said.

"We never let up. We were going full throttle the whole summer."

She said minoritygovernments have challenges, but also haveopportunities. One of those opportunities she points to is implementing a national pharmacare strategy, with input from other parties.

"If we can get people around a table who kind of put politics aside, and say, 'let's work together to do something that will benefit all Canadians.'"

McCrimmon, the first woman to lead a Canadian Forces flying squadron, was elected as the first representative of this new riding in 2015.

The 2019 field included:

• Well-known wedding dress designer McCaffreyforthe Conservatives.
• Tech worker and self-described roller coaster enthusiast Scott Miller of the People's Party.
• Green Party candidateJennifer Purdy, a family doctor and another military veteran.
