Police officer shot in fatal Abbeydale standoff released from hospital

A Calgary police officer who was shot last week during a violent series of events starting with an armed robbery and ending with the lone suspect's death has been released from hospital.

Const. Jordan Forget was shot March 27 while he was chasing a man who was suspected of robbing a convenience store in the northeast district of Abbeydale and then trying to carjack a woman at gunpoint.

The five-year member of the force suffered multiple injuries. He was treated at the Foothills hospital and released on Tuesday, police said in a release.

"The officer and his family members are extremely grateful for the well-wishes and support they have received," police said. "They have asked for privacy at their home as herecuperates."

After shooting the officer, the suspect was tracked down between two houses and a garage, police say.

After exchanging gunfire with the pursuing officers, the suspect holed up in the garage.

Police Chief Roger Chaffin told media later in the day that the garage caught fire as the standoff played out.

Once the fire was put out, the suspect was found dead inside.

Police did not say what might have started the fire.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating, which is standard when a police-involved incident results in a death.
