North Shore flooding: Lynn Valley creeks overflow, heavy rain hits Dundarave

Creeksoverflowed and flooded streets and homes in Lynn Valley in the midst of heavy rainfall Monday night.

District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded to the area of Fromme Road and Hastings Creekwhere water began flooding roads and flowing into Argyle Secondary School sometime before 10:30 p.m. PT.

Mike Harris, who lives on Croft Road just off Fromme, said that sometime at around9:30 p.m. PT the rainfall intensified.

"We have skylights in our house and it sounded like someone had a hose on top of the house," he told CBC News.

About a halfhour after that, fire trucks and police cars started turning up in the area.

"We didn't know what was going on, took a look out, and the middle of the street was covered in water. It was basically a river going down the middle of our street," he said.

Harris said he saw fire crews and police officers going door to door where water was running down into people's garages. He said he and his wife also saw some of the neighbours down the street getting intotheir cars and leaving the area.

Harris said he went out and saw about half a foot of water running down Frommeand that it looked like some big rocks hadwashed out of the creek and into the road.

Debris flow fears prompt Kilmer evacuations

Kimberley Marling, who livesonKilmerRoad, which is further uphill and along Kilmer Creek,was awoken by a neighbour who called at around 10 p.m. PT to tell her about the flooding on their street.

"As soon as I opened the door, I realized that water was gushing into the house," Marling said. "The little creek just up the street had broke its blocks, so we have been evacuated."

Marling and her husbandwere told by officialsthat they could go to the emergency evacuation muster area inLynn Valley Centre, but they decided to find a hotel instead.

When she left, half of her street hadbeen evacuated and while her basement was flooded, her neighbour's home was "just gushing with water," she said. "The police were saying we might have some big boulders coming down, so they evacuated [the area.]"

Marling said she doesn't know how long they'll have to stay away, or what state her home will be in when she is allowed to go back.

"They don't know how long it's going to keep raining," she said. "Our whole house isprobably full of water by now.It's upsetting, but there is nothing you can do."

Flooding reported in West Vancouver

The West Vancouver Fire Department was also busy Monday night, responding to multiple calls of flooding in homes.

Local flooding was reported on streets in the Dundarave area, the department tweeted just after midnight on Nov. 4.
